Social loafing is a phenomenon in which individuals exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This reduction in motivation often occurs because individuals feel their contributions are less identifiable or essential within a larger group. Social loafing can lead to decreased overall productivity and can be influenced by factors such as task complexity, group size, and perceived fairness of effort distribution.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Researchers asked participants to pull a rope attached to a device that measured force. When people pulled alone, they averaged about 85 kilograms of force. But when they pulled in groups of three, each person’s average force dropped to 65 kilograms. In groups of six, it fell to 45 kilograms per person. Why? Because individuals felt less personally responsible for the outcome—their effort was not easily singled out. Interestingly, when the task was made more challenging, like requiring coordination or when participants believed their individual output was being recorded, social loafing decreased significantly. This shows that transparency and personal accountability can counteract the effect.
