Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses that increase an organism's fitness. These behaviors can include migration, hunting strategies, or social interactions. For example, some birds migrate to warmer regions during winter to find food. Behavioral adaptations are crucial because they allow organisms to respond flexibly to changing environmental conditions, thereby improving their chances of survival.

Professor: Today, let's look at an example of behavioral adaptation in a species of ant called the 'honeypot ant.' In the desert, food and water are scarce. So these ants have developed a unique behavior. Some worker ants, called 'repletes,' are chosen by the colony. They are fed so much nectar that their abdomens swell to the size of grapes. Then, they hang from the ceiling of the underground nest, acting as living storage tanks. When food is scarce, other ants stroke the repletes' antennae, and the repletes regurgitate some of the stored nectar to feed them. This behavior ensures the entire colony survives long periods of drought. It's not a physical change; it's a coordinated social behavior that has evolved to cope with environmental stress.
