TOEFL Speaking Task 3

Concept: Functional Fixedness. Functional fixedness is a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering creative problem-solving. When faced with a novel challenge, people often fail to think beyond an object's typical function, even if that function is irrelevant to the current problem. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a flexible mindset that can reconceptualize objects based on their physical properties rather than their conventional purposes.

Professor: So, let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and they had to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many struggled. They tried nailing the candle to the wall or melting the wax to stick it, but nothing worked. The solution? Empty the thumbtacks from the box, tack the box to the wall, and place the candle on top of the box. The problem was that participants saw the box only as a container for tacks, not as a potential shelf. That’s functional fixedness. Once they realized the box could support the candle, they solved it easily. In another version, when the tacks were presented separately from the box, almost everyone solved it quickly—because the box was no longer tied to its typical function.
