📖 Текст

In psychology, the concept of 'cognitive dissonance' refers to the mental discomfort experienced when an individual holds two or more contradictory beliefs, values, or attitudes simultaneously. This discomfort often leads people to rationalize or change their beliefs to reduce the inconsistency and restore internal harmony. The theory, proposed by Leon Festinger, suggests that humans strive for cognitive consistency and will take active steps to align their thoughts and actions, even if it means altering their original perceptions or justifying questionable behavior.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Participants were asked to perform a very boring task—turning pegs on a pegboard for an hour. Afterward, they were asked to tell the next participant that the task was actually fun and interesting. Some were paid one dollar for this lie, others were paid twenty dollars. Later, when asked how they really felt about the task, those paid one dollar rated it as more enjoyable than those paid twenty. Why? Because with only one dollar, the lie wasn't justified by a large reward. The participants experienced dissonance—'I said it was fun, but I had little reason to.' To reduce that discomfort, they convinced themselves the task truly was enjoyable. The twenty-dollar group had ample justification for lying, so they felt no dissonance and continued to see the task as boring.
❓ Вопрос Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of cognitive dissonance and how it affects people's attitudes.
