The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive objects only in terms of their most common use, which can hinder problem-solving. When individuals are fixated on the conventional function of an item, they fail to see alternative uses that might offer creative solutions. This cognitive bias often prevents people from thinking outside the box, especially in situations requiring novel approaches. Overcoming functional fixedness involves deliberately considering unconventional ways to use familiar objects or tools.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from psychology. In an experiment, participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and matches, and asked to attach the candle to the wall so it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many participants struggled because they saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks. They tried to melt wax or use tacks directly, but nothing worked. However, the solution was to empty the box, tack it to the wall as a platform, and place the candle on it. The trick was to see the box not just as a holder, but as a shelf. Once participants realized the box's alternative function, they solved the problem quickly. This shows how functional fixedness limits our ability to use objects in novel ways.
