In biology, the concept of 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to increase its chances of survival and reproduction in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses to environmental challenges. These behaviors can be innate, such as migration patterns, or acquired through experience, such as foraging techniques. Behavioral adaptations often arise through natural selection because individuals exhibiting beneficial behaviors are more likely to survive and pass on their genes.

Professor: So, let me give you a clear example. Consider the green sea turtle. When hatchlings emerge from their nests on the beach at night, they instinctively crawl toward the brightest horizon, which is usually the ocean because moonlight reflects off the water. However, on developed coastlines, artificial lights from buildings and streetlights can confuse them, causing them to crawl inland. Over time, some turtle populations have shown a behavioral adaptation: hatchlings in these areas now tend to move away from the brightest light source if it seems unnatural, and instead follow the dimmer, more consistent glow toward the sea. This learned or selected behavior improves their survival. So, this is a behavioral adaptation—a change in behavior that helps the turtles cope with human-altered environments.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
