📖 เนื้อเรื่อง
The concept of 'behavioral contagion' refers to the tendency of individuals to imitate the behaviors, attitudes, or emotions of those around them, often unconsciously. This phenomenon occurs when one person's actions serve as a stimulus that triggers similar actions in others, leading to a ripple effect within a group. Behavioral contagion is particularly strong in ambiguous situations, where individuals look to others for cues on how to behave. It can be observed in various settings, from crowd behavior to consumer choices, and is driven by social conformity and the desire for group acceptance.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a real study. Researchers set up a scenario in a university library where students were studying alone at separate tables. An actor, pretending to be a student, entered and sat at a nearby table. After a few minutes, the actor began to look up at the ceiling and smile, as if seeing something amusing. The researchers secretly observed the reactions of the actual students. Within a short time, many of the students also looked up at the ceiling, even though there was nothing there. Some even smiled too. Interestingly, when the researchers asked the students later, they couldn't explain why they looked up; they just felt they should. This shows that without any direct communication, the students unconsciously imitated the actor's behavior, illustrating behavioral contagion in a simple, everyday setting.
