In biology, the concept of 'mimicry' refers to the evolutionary phenomenon where one species evolves to resemble another species, often to gain a survival advantage. This resemblance can be visual, auditory, or chemical. Mimicry typically benefits the mimic by deterring predators, as predators learn to avoid the model species due to its unpalatable or dangerous traits. The mimic, although harmless, capitalizes on this learned avoidance. Mimicry is a result of natural selection, where individuals with closer resemblance to the model are more likely to survive and reproduce.

Professor: Let's take a real-world example. In the rainforests of South America, there’s a harmless snake called the false coral snake. It looks almost identical to the venomous true coral snake, with the same bright red, yellow, and black banding. Predators like birds have learned to avoid the true coral snake because its bite is deadly. So, when they see a snake with those colors, they stay away. The false coral snake, though harmless, benefits from this because predators mistake it for the dangerous one. This resemblance isn’t accidental—over many generations, false coral snakes that looked more like the true coral snake survived longer and produced more offspring. Eventually, the population became very similar in appearance. So, this is a classic case of mimicry where a harmless species copies a harmful one to avoid predation.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of mimicry as described in the reading passage.
