The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used, thereby hindering creative problem-solving. When faced with a new challenge, individuals often fail to see alternative functions for familiar items because their mental representation of the object is rigidly tied to its typical purpose. This phenomenon was first identified by Gestalt psychologists in the early 20th century and remains a key topic in studies of creativity and problem-solving.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Participants were asked to mount a candle on a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. They were given a box of tacks, a book of matches, and a candle. Most people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but that failed. The solution was to empty the tack box, tack it to the wall as a platform, and place the candle inside it. However, many participants couldn't see the box as anything but a container for tacks. That's functional fixedness. Interestingly, when the tacks were presented separately from the box, participants solved the problem much more easily. The box became just another object, free to be used as a shelf. So the key is overcoming that mental block.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
