Social loafing is the tendency for individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This phenomenon occurs because individuals feel less accountable for the group’s outcome and perceive their own contribution as dispensable. Social loafing can reduce overall group productivity. Researchers have identified several factors that influence its occurrence, such as the size of the group, the perceived importance of the task, and the clarity of individual roles. When tasks are challenging or meaningful, social loafing tends to decrease.

Professor: Today we’re talking about social loafing—and I want to give you a real example from my own teaching experience. In one of my psychology classes, I assigned a group project. Each group had five students, and they had to write a joint research report. I told them they’d all receive the same grade. What happened? A few students did most of the work, while others just showed up to meetings and contributed very little. They figured, “Someone else will handle it.” That’s social loafing. But then, in another semester, I changed the assignment. I made each group member responsible for a specific section of the report, and I told them they’d be graded individually on their section. Suddenly, everyone worked much harder. They knew their part mattered and that their grade depended on their own effort. So the key was making individual contributions clear and accountable.
