In biology, the term 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to increase its chances of survival and reproduction in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses to environmental challenges. These behaviors can include migration, hibernation, or specific foraging techniques. They often arise through natural selection, as individuals with advantageous behaviors are more likely to pass on their genes.

Professor: So, let’s look at a concrete example of behavioral adaptation. Consider the sea otter, a marine mammal that feeds on sea urchins, clams, and crabs. To open hard-shelled prey, sea otters use rocks. They dive to the ocean floor, pick up a rock, and then float on their backs. They place the rock on their chest and smash the shellfish against it until it cracks. This is not an instinctive behavior; mother otters teach their pups how to do it. Pups watch and practice, refining their technique over time. This tool use is a learned behavioral adaptation that allows otters to access nutritious food that other predators cannot, increasing their survival and reproductive success in their coastal habitat.
❓ 问题 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
