The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving and creativity. When faced with a novel challenge, people often fail to repurpose objects because they are 'fixed' on their usual function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a deliberate shift in perspective, allowing the mind to explore unconventional applications.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example. In a psychology experiment, participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches. Their task was to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn properly without dripping wax on the floor. Many people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but both failed. The solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall, and use it as a platform for the candle. However, participants often overlooked the box because they saw it only as a container for thumbtacks, not as a potential shelf. This demonstrates functional fixedness—the box's usual role blocked their ability to see its alternative use. Once they overcame that mental block, the solution became obvious.
