In biology, the concept of 'behavioral thermoregulation' refers to the deliberate actions animals take to regulate their body temperature by moving to different environments or adjusting their posture. This strategy is crucial for maintaining optimal internal temperatures for physiological processes, especially in ectothermic animals like reptiles and insects, which rely on external heat sources. By choosing sunlit or shaded areas, basking, or burrowing, they can increase or decrease heat absorption. The behavior is often fine-tuned to balance energy costs and benefits, ensuring survival in fluctuating thermal conditions.

Professor: Let me give you a concrete example from a study on desert lizards. These lizards live in an environment where ground temperature can exceed 50°C during midday. To avoid overheating, they exhibit clear behavioral thermoregulation. In the morning, when it's cool, they bask on sun-warmed rocks, spreading their bodies flat to absorb maximum heat. As the day progresses and the ground becomes scorching, they shift their behavior—they lift their bodies high off the hot surface, using a 'push-up' posture to reduce contact, and then move into the shade of bushes or retreat into burrows. By doing so, they maintain their body temperature around their preferred 37°C. Interestingly, they also shift their activity times—being active early and late in the day, and staying hidden during peak heat. This example shows how precise and adaptive their choices are to balance heating and cooling needs.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral thermoregulation.
