In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive objects only in their traditional or most common use, which limits creative problem-solving. When individuals are confronted with a problem, they often fail to see alternative functions for familiar items. This cognitive bias can hinder innovation and flexibility in thinking. Overcoming functional fixedness requires actively reimagining the potential uses of objects beyond their conventional purposes. The concept is frequently illustrated in experiments where participants must use items in novel ways to achieve a goal.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches. Their task was to attach the candle to a wall in such a way that it could burn properly without dripping wax on the floor. Many participants tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt the wax to stick it—both failed. The solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack the box to the wall, and place the candle inside the box. But participants couldn't see the box as anything other than a container for tacks. That's functional fixedness—they were stuck on the box's typical use. Only when the box was presented empty did they easily solve it, because then its alternative function as a shelf became obvious.
