📖 読解資料

In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving. When faced with a novel challenge, people often fail to think creatively because they are 'fixed' on the object's typical function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a deliberate shift in perspective to recognize that objects can serve multiple purposes beyond their original design.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a candle, a box of tacks, and a matchbox, and were asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn properly. One group received all items separately—the tacks and matches were not inside the boxes. Another group received the same items but the tacks and matches were placed inside their respective boxes. The first group solved the problem easily: they used the tacks to nail the matchbox to the wall, then placed the candle on top. The second group struggled. Why? Because they saw the boxes only as containers for the tacks and matches, not as potential platforms. They were fixated on the boxes' typical function—holding things—and couldn't see them as a support. This is a clear example of functional fixedness.
❓ 質問 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
