📖 Bài đọc

In biology, the concept of 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to increase its chances of survival and reproduction in its specific environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses to environmental challenges. These behaviors can include migration, hunting strategies, or social cooperation, and they often develop over generations through natural selection. The key point is that these behaviors directly help an organism cope with its habitat's demands, such as finding food, avoiding predators, or enduring climate changes.

Professor: Let me give you a clear example. Consider the Arctic fox. In winter, when the ground is covered with snow, the fox hunts for small rodents like lemmings. But how does it find them under the snow? Well, the fox has a behavioral adaptation: it uses its keen sense of hearing to detect the precise location of a lemming moving beneath the snowpack. Once it hears the movement, it jumps into the air and dives headfirst into the snow to catch its prey. This behavior, called 'mousing,' is not something the fox is born knowing perfectly. Young foxes learn it by watching their mothers and practicing. Over time, they become efficient hunters. This jumping-and-diving behavior directly increases their survival because they can access food that would otherwise be hidden, especially during harsh winters when other food sources are scarce. It’s a perfect example of a behavioral adaptation that helps the fox thrive in its snowy environment.
❓ Câu hỏi Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
