📖 Bài đọc

The concept of 'behavioral momentum' refers to the tendency of a behavior to persist even when reinforcement is altered or removed. It suggests that behaviors established with a high rate of reinforcement are more resistant to change than those established with low reinforcement. In practical terms, behavioral momentum can be used to maintain desired behaviors in the face of disruptions, by building a strong history of reinforcement before introducing changes.

🎧 Bài giảng

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classroom setting. A teacher wanted her students to transition quietly from one activity to another. Initially, she praised and rewarded them every time they moved quietly, reinforcing the behavior frequently. After a few weeks, the students had a strong history of reinforcement. Then, one day, she introduced a new rule: they had to transition quietly without any verbal praise, just a simple nod. Even though the reinforcement was reduced, the students continued to transition quietly. In fact, they maintained this behavior even when the classroom was noisy and distracting. Because the behavior had been reinforced so consistently at the start, it showed high behavioral momentum, resisting the change in reinforcement.
❓ Câu hỏi Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral momentum and how it applies to the students' behavior.
