In biology, the concept of 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action an organism takes to survive in its environment, often in response to changes in conditions. Unlike physical adaptations, which involve body structures, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive actions that improve an organism's chances of reproduction or survival. These behaviors can be individual, such as a bird migrating to find food, or social, like wolves hunting in packs. Behavioral adaptations develop over generations through natural selection, where beneficial behaviors become more common in a population.

Professor: So, let me give you a clear example of behavioral adaptation. Consider the desert iguana, a lizard found in the southwestern United States. During the hottest part of the day, the ground temperature can exceed 50 degrees Celsius, which would be lethal. Instead of staying exposed, the iguana climbs onto rocks or bushes, lifting its body off the hot sand. This is a behavioral adaptation—by elevating itself, it avoids the heat radiating from the ground. More importantly, it also changes its activity pattern: it forages for food early in the morning and late in the afternoon, when temperatures are cooler. During midday, it remains in the shade, often under rocks, to conserve water and prevent overheating. This behavior wasn't taught; it's an instinctive response that has evolved over time. In fact, iguanas that didn't adopt this behavior would overheat and die, so the ones that did survived and passed on their genes. So you see, this behavior directly increases its chances of survival in a harsh desert environment.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
