TOEFL Speaking Task 3

In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing novel uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving. When faced with a challenge, people often become fixated on an object's typical function and fail to consider alternative applications, even when those alternatives could provide a simple solution.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to the wall so that it could burn properly. Most people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but these failed. The solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall as a platform, and place the candle inside. However, many participants couldn't see the box as anything but a container for thumbtacks. They were fixated on its usual role. When the experimenters presented the thumbtacks separately from the box, participants solved the problem much more easily. This shows how functional fixedness—seeing the box only as a holder—blocked their creativity.
