The concept of 'behavioral interdependence' refers to the way in which the actions of one individual in a group directly influence the actions and outcomes of others. It is a key feature of social groups, distinguishing them from mere collections of people. In such groups, members rely on each other to achieve common goals, and their behaviors are coordinated. This interdependence often leads to the development of specific roles and norms, which help maintain order and efficiency. Behavioral interdependence is not just about cooperation; it also involves mutual adjustment, where individuals modify their own behavior in response to the expectations and actions of others.

Professor: So, let me give you an example from a study on a rowing team. In a competitive rowing team, each member must synchronize their strokes with the others. If one rower speeds up or slows down, the boat's rhythm is disrupted, and the team's overall speed suffers. The rowers constantly watch each other and adjust their own pace to match the group. This is a clear case of behavioral interdependence. Also, they develop specific roles—like the stroke rower who sets the pace and the coxswain who coordinates. If the stroke rower changes technique, the others must adapt immediately. Even in training, they practice together not just to build strength, but to reinforce this mutual adjustment. So, their success depends on how well they anticipate and respond to each other's actions, not just on individual talent.
❓ 问题 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral interdependence.
