The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency of individuals to perceive objects only in terms of their typical or intended functions, which can hinder creative problem-solving. When people encounter a problem that requires using an object in a novel way, they often fail to see alternative uses because their minds are 'fixed' on the object's conventional role. This cognitive bias limits flexibility and can prevent the discovery of innovative solutions.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classic psychology experiment. Participants were asked to mount a candle on a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. They were given a box of thumbtacks, a book of matches, and a candle. Most participants tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but they failed. The solution was to empty the box, tack it to the wall as a platform, and place the candle inside. However, many people didn't think of using the box because they saw it only as a container for the tacks, not as a potential shelf. This illustrates functional fixedness: the participants were so fixated on the box's usual purpose that they couldn't see its alternative function as a support.
