TOEFL Speaking Task 3

In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing novel or alternative functions for familiar items. Functional fixedness often hinders problem-solving because it restricts creative thinking. When faced with a challenge, people tend to focus on an object's typical purpose, ignoring other possible uses that might lead to a solution. Overcoming this bias requires deliberate effort to think beyond conventional associations.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classic experiment. Participants were given a candle, a box of thumbtacks, and a book of matches. They were asked to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many struggled. The typical solution is to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall, and place the candle inside. But most participants couldn't think of using the box as a candle holder because they saw it only as a container for thumbtacks. That's functional fixedness. However, when the experimenter presented the thumbtacks separately, not in the box, participants solved the problem quickly. Without the box's obvious 'container' function, they could see it as a platform. So, the key was breaking the mental set that limited the box's use.
