📖 Bài đọc

The concept of 'anchoring' refers to the cognitive bias where individuals rely heavily on the first piece of information they receive (the 'anchor') when making decisions. Once an anchor is set, subsequent judgments are adjusted around it, often insufficiently, leading to skewed outcomes. Anchoring affects various domains, including negotiations, pricing, and everyday choices. The effect is robust even when the anchor is arbitrary or unrelated to the decision at hand.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example. In a consumer study, participants were shown a product—a wireless speaker. Half were told the suggested retail price was $200, the other half were told it was $400. Then they were asked to write down their maximum willingness to pay. Those who saw the $200 anchor offered on average $150, while those who saw the $400 anchor offered $280—even though both groups saw the same speaker and could hear its actual quality. The initial price served as an anchor, pulling their valuations toward it. Importantly, when asked, participants denied that the suggested price influenced them, yet the data clearly showed otherwise. This demonstrates how anchoring operates subtly, shaping our decisions without our conscious awareness.
❓ Câu hỏi Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of anchoring.
