The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency of individuals to perceive objects only in terms of their most common or traditional use, which prevents them from imagining alternative functions. This cognitive bias limits problem-solving creativity because the person fails to see beyond the object's usual purpose. Functional fixedness is often overcome through deliberate mental restructuring, such as breaking the object into components or redefining its properties.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classic psychology experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many struggled because they saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks. However, the solution was to empty the box, tack it to the wall, and place the candle inside it. Those who solved it had to overcome functional fixedness by treating the box as a shelf, not just a holder. In another variation, when the box was presented empty, participants solved it much faster, because they didn't associate it with the tacks. This shows that functional fixedness is a mental block that can be broken when we consciously redefine an object's possible uses.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
