In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive objects only in their typical or intended way, which limits creative problem-solving. When people encounter a problem, they often fail to see alternative uses for familiar items because their minds are 'fixed' on the object's standard function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires restructuring the problem or deliberately thinking beyond conventional uses. This cognitive bias can hinder innovation and adaptability in everyday situations.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a classic experiment. Participants were asked to attach a candle to a wall so that it would burn properly. They were given a box of tacks, a book of matches, and a candle. Most people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall, but it kept falling. They couldn't think of using the box as a platform. Why? Because they saw the box only as a container for tacks—that's functional fixedness. However, when the tacks were placed outside the box, participants immediately realized they could tack the box to the wall and place the candle on it. The moment the box's role as a container was removed, they could see its alternative use as a shelf. This shows how breaking fixed associations helps solve problems.
❓ 문제 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
