Social loafing is the tendency for individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This phenomenon occurs because individual contributions become less identifiable, leading to reduced personal accountability. Researchers have found that social loafing is more likely in tasks where collective output is emphasized, and it can negatively impact group performance. However, the effect can be minimized when tasks are challenging, engaging, or when individuals believe their specific contribution is crucial.

Professor: Let me give you a real example from a study I conducted with my students. I asked them to clap and shout as loudly as possible, first alone and then in groups. When they did it alone, I measured the sound intensity with a decibel meter. Each person produced about 80 decibels on average. Then I had them do the same in groups of six. You might think the combined sound would be six times louder, but it wasn't. The total intensity was only about three times that of a single person. In other words, each individual was actually making less noise when they were part of the group. When I asked them why, some said they felt less responsible because others were also making noise. This perfectly illustrates the concept of social loafing in a simple, everyday task.
