In sociology, the concept of 'role exit' refers to the process by which individuals disengage from a social role that has been central to their identity and transition into a new role or period of life. This process often involves four stages: doubt, searching for alternatives, the actual exit, and the creation of a new identity. Role exit is not simply a single event but a gradual, often emotionally challenging transformation, particularly when the role has been long-standing or socially valued.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a study I conducted on military veterans. A man we'll call John spent twenty years as a senior officer in the Navy. He loved his job—it gave him status, purpose, and a tight-knit community. However, as he approached retirement, he began to doubt whether he could continue, feeling exhausted by the constant relocations and the strain on his family. He considered other options, like teaching or working in private security. After much debate, he decided to retire. The actual exit was difficult—he had to give up his uniform, his office, and daily contact with his comrades. In the first year, he felt lost and even depressed. But gradually, he started volunteering at a local school and later became a full-time mentor for at-risk youth. He built a new identity around helping others, not commanding them. Now, when people ask what he does, he says 'I'm a mentor,' not 'I was a commander.'
