TOEFL Speaking Task 2

The university will implement a new policy requiring all students living in campus dormitories to purchase a meal plan. Starting next semester, the basic meal plan will cost $2,500 per semester and include 10 meals per week. University officials believe this will encourage healthier eating habits and increase student participation in on-campus dining facilities.

Man: Did you see the email about the mandatory meal plan? I can't believe they're forcing us to buy one. Woman: I know, right? I think it's a terrible idea. First, I usually cook my own meals because I have dietary restrictions. The dining hall options are mostly processed and high in sodium, which doesn't work for me. Second, it's way too expensive. I already spend about $1,200 a semester on groceries. This new plan would cost me more than double that, and I'd end up wasting meals since I won't use all 10 each week. Man: Exactly! Plus, many of us have part-time jobs and eat at odd hours. The dining hall isn't even open late. Woman: That's another reason why this won't work for most students.
