TOEFL Speaking Task 2

Campus Announcement: Starting next semester, the university will extend library hours to 2 a.m. on weekdays during exam periods. To fund this, the library will reduce its weekend hours from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. to 1 p.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The administration believes this change will better serve students during high-demand periods.

M: Did you see the announcement about the library hours? I think it's a terrible idea. W: Really? I thought it was great—more late-night study time before exams. M: But they're cutting weekend hours! I always use Saturday afternoons to catch up on readings and do research. Many students work part-time on weekdays, so weekends are our only free time. Now we'll lose four hours each weekend. W: I see your point, but I rarely study on weekends. I prefer late nights, and so do my friends. The extra hours during exam week are when I need them most. M: Still, the library is packed on weekends too. Plus, reducing hours doesn't just hurt students—it hurts staff who need those shifts. I think the administration should find other funding sources instead of taking from one group to give to another.
