Listen to part of a lecture in a biology class. The professor is discussing animal communication. Professor: Today, we're going to talk about how animals communicate, and I want to focus on a fascinating example: the waggle dance of honeybees. When a worker bee finds a good source of nectar, it returns to the hive and performs a series of movements, which we call the waggle dance. The dance consists of a straight run, during which the bee waggles its abdomen, followed by a turn to the right, back to the starting point, then another straight run, and a turn to the left. The direction of the straight run relative to the vertical indicates the direction of the food source relative to the sun. The duration of the waggle run communicates the distance. For example, a longer waggle run means the food is farther away. Interestingly, this dance is not only about location; it also conveys the quality of the food source. Bees that have found a rich source perform a more vigorous dance, with more repetitions, which recruits more foragers. However, recent research suggests that not all bees pay attention to the dance equally. Some older foragers may rely more on their memory of familiar sites, especially if they've visited them before. So, the dance is a powerful signal, but it's not the only factor in a bee's decision-making.
