Listen to part of a lecture in an environmental science class. Today we're going to talk about a surprising source of pollution: your laundry. When you wash synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon, tiny microfibers are released into the water. These fibers, often less than a millimeter long, are too small to be caught by standard wastewater treatment filters. As a result, they end up in rivers and oceans. Once there, they can be ingested by marine life, and they also attract harmful chemicals, which then enter the food chain. Studies have shown that a single load of laundry can release over a million microfibers. However, researchers are developing solutions. For example, some companies are designing washing machine filters that capture these fibers. Others are creating more durable fabrics that shed less. But the most immediate action you can take is to wash clothes less frequently and use cold water, which reduces fiber shedding. So, while the problem is significant, there are practical steps we can all take to mitigate it.
