Listen to part of a lecture in a biology class. The professor is discussing animal communication. Professor: Today we're going to talk about a fascinating aspect of animal behavior: communication. While many animals use sounds or visual signals, some rely heavily on chemical signals called pheromones. For example, ants release pheromones to mark trails to food sources, allowing other ants to follow the scent. But pheromones aren't just for ants. Moths, for instance, use them to attract mates from large distances. Interestingly, the way pheromones are detected varies. In mammals, the main olfactory system detects general odors, while a separate structure, the vomeronasal organ, is specialized for pheromone detection. This organ sends signals to a different part of the brain, which is linked to reproductive and social behaviors. However, recent studies have shown that some pheromones can also be detected by the main olfactory system, blurring the line between the two systems. So, the idea that pheromones are only processed by the vomeronasal organ is an oversimplification. This has implications for how we understand social interactions in animals, including humans.
