Narrator: Listen to part of a lecture in an environmental science class. Professor: Today, we're going to talk about a surprising solution to climate change: seaweed farming. Seaweed, or macroalgae, grows rapidly and absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it photosynthesizes. When it dies, much of it sinks to the ocean floor, where the carbon remains stored for centuries. This is called carbon sequestration. But seaweed farming isn't just about carbon. It can also reduce ocean acidification locally, because the seaweed absorbs dissolved CO2, which lowers the acidity of the surrounding water. This benefits shellfish like oysters and clams. Additionally, seaweed can be used as a sustainable food source, animal feed, or even biofuel. However, there are challenges. Large-scale farms might affect local ecosystems. For example, if seaweed covers too much surface area, it could block sunlight from reaching other marine plants. So, researchers are investigating the optimal scale and location for these farms. The question is whether seaweed can be a major tool in our fight against climate change. That will depend on careful management.
