Listen to part of a lecture in a biology class. The professor is discussing the behavior of honeybees. Professor: Today we're going to talk about how honeybees communicate. You might know that bees perform dances to share information about food sources. But there's more to it. The famous 'waggle dance' was first decoded by Karl von Frisch, who won a Nobel Prize for his work. When a forager bee discovers a rich nectar source, she returns to the hive and performs this dance on the vertical surface of the comb. The angle of the dance relative to gravity indicates the direction of the food relative to the sun. The duration of the waggle run correlates with the distance. However, recent studies show that this communication is not always accurate. Environmental factors, like wind or obstacles, can distort the message. Also, bees sometimes perform the dance to indicate a poor-quality food source, perhaps to mislead other bees or to avoid competition. This suggests that bee communication is more complex and context-dependent than we originally thought.
