Narrator: Listen to part of a lecture in an anthropology class. Professor: Today we're going to talk about the concept of 'gift economies,' which are quite different from market economies. In a market economy, goods are exchanged for money or other goods, and the transaction is usually complete. But in a gift economy, giving creates a social bond. The famous anthropologist Marcel Mauss studied this in Polynesian and Native American cultures. He found that gifts are never truly 'free.' They carry an obligation to reciprocate. For example, in the potlatch ceremony of the Pacific Northwest, a chief would give away vast amounts of wealth to rival chiefs. This might seem generous, but it actually placed the receiver in a position of debt. To maintain status, the receiver had to give an even larger feast later. So, the gift is a tool for building hierarchy and social cohesion. Mauss argued that this system ensures that resources are redistributed and that no one hoards too much power. Understanding this helps us see that economic systems are not just about material survival, but also about social relationships.
