Despite global commitments by many nations to reduce carbon emissions, the aviation industry continues to enjoy tax-free fuel policies, while ordinary citizens face carbon taxes on their daily transportation. When individuals are forced to pay environmental costs for every car ride or flight, international aviation giants are exempt by law from bearing equivalent responsibility. Does this institutional double standard imply that current efforts to combat climate change are, in essence, punishing individuals rather than genuinely restraining high-emission industries?
