As global urban populations have for the first time surpassed rural ones, many major metropolitan areas are witnessing the gradual encroachment of commercial development on public spaces such as parks and squares. At the same time, other cities are employing mandatory policies to preserve these areas as venues for resident interaction. In your view, should cities prioritize the social function of public spaces over their potential economic returns? Please state your position, supported by reasons and illustrative examples.
