Modern research instead emphasizes 'possibilism', which acknowledges environmental constraints but highlights human agency and technological innovation in overcoming them. For instance, the Netherlands, despite its low-lying geography, has thrived through advanced water management systems. This shift reflects a broader trend in social sciences toward recognizing the interplay between nature and culture, rather than attributing causality to a single factor.
