📖 Reading Passage

The concept of 'cognitive load' refers to the total amount of mental effort being used in the working memory. In educational psychology, cognitive load theory suggests that learning is hampered when the information presented exceeds the learner's available working memory capacity. This is particularly relevant in multimedia learning, where learners must simultaneously process visual and auditory information. Researchers have identified three types of cognitive load: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane. Intrinsic load is inherent to the complexity of the material, while extraneous load is caused by poor instructional design. Germane load, however, is beneficial as it involves the mental resources dedicated to constructing schemas. Effective instructional design aims to minimize extraneous load and manage intrinsic load, thereby freeing capacity for germane load, which enhances deep learning.
