However, this theory has been heavily criticized for oversimplifying the complex interplay between nature and culture. Contemporary scholars argue that while environmental factors can constrain or facilitate certain activities, human innovation and cultural adaptation often mitigate these influences. For instance, the development of air conditioning in hot climates or irrigation in arid regions demonstrates technological responses to environmental challenges. Moreover, globalization has further weakened the link between environment and societal outcomes, as resources and ideas are increasingly exchanged across borders. Thus, modern geography emphasizes a nuanced view, recognizing environmental influences without succumbing to reductionism.
