Recent studies in cognitive neuroscience have revealed that the human brain's capacity for multitasking is far more limited than previously assumed. While many individuals believe they can efficiently perform multiple tasks simultaneously, research indicates that what actually occurs is rapid task-switching, which incurs a cognitive cost known as 'switch cost.' This cost manifests as reduced accuracy and increased reaction time when alternating between tasks. Furthermore, neuroimaging data show that the prefrontal cortex, responsible for executive control, struggles to process competing streams of information concurrently. Consequently, attempts to multitask often lead to diminished productivity and higher error rates, challenging the popular notion of multitasking as a desirable skill in modern work environments.
