Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, you might think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but its earliest ancestor dates back to the 15th century in Italy. However, the first practical bicycle, called the 'draisine', was invented by Karl Drais in 1817. It had no pedals; you pushed it along with your feet. Then in 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'boneshaker'. Finally, the modern safety bicycle, with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, appeared in the 1880s, making cycling much safer and more popular.
