Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the history of the postal service. Many people assume that the first stamps were introduced in the UK in 1840, and indeed the Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp. However, an earlier form of prepaid postage existed in France in the 17th century, where paper with a special watermark was used to indicate payment. This system was not widely adopted, though. It was the British system that became the model for other countries. Interestingly, the first stamp in the United States, issued in 1847, featured Benjamin Franklin, not George Washington as many might expect.
