Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding more parks and trees can reduce city temperatures by up to 2 degrees Celsius. However, the researchers noted that the placement of these spaces is crucial. For example, shaded areas near buildings have a greater cooling effect than open lawns. The study also highlighted that community gardens, while beneficial for social interaction, have a minimal impact on temperature regulation compared to street trees. So, if a city aims to combat the heat island effect, investing in street trees should be a priority.
