Today in our environmental science lecture, we will discuss the impact of urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks and community gardens can reduce the urban heat island effect by up to 3 degrees Celsius. Additionally, these areas improve air quality by absorbing pollutants. However, the benefits depend on the size and distribution of green spaces. For example, small scattered gardens have less cooling effect than one large central park. Moreover, tree canopy coverage is crucial; a 30% increase in canopy can lower local temperatures significantly. So, city planners should prioritize creating connected green corridors rather than isolated patches.
