Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle. Now, you might think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, and you'd be right. However, the earliest version, called the 'draisine', appeared in 1817. It had no pedals; you pushed it along with your feet. Then, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel. But that design was unstable. The famous 'penny-farthing' with its huge front wheel came later, around 1870. It was fast but dangerous. Finally, the modern 'safety bicycle' with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive emerged in the 1880s. This design became widely popular because it was much safer and easier to ride.
