Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The first prototype, invented in 1817 by Karl von Drais, was made of wood and had no pedals. Riders pushed their feet against the ground to move forward. It was called a 'hobby horse'. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'velocipede'. However, this design was uncomfortable and earned the nickname 'boneshaker'. The 'penny-farthing', with its large front wheel, became popular in the 1870s but was dangerous. Finally, the 'safety bicycle' with chain drive and equal-sized wheels emerged in the 1880s, which is the basis for modern bicycles.
