Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a hobby horse, appeared in 1817 in Germany. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet along the ground. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel in France, creating the velocipede. However, it was uncomfortable due to its rigid frame and wooden wheels. The penny-farthing, with a large front wheel, became popular in the 1870s but was dangerous because riders sat high above the ground. Finally, in 1885, the safety bicycle was introduced, featuring two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, which made cycling much safer and more practical for everyday use.
