Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people believe the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but its origins actually go back further. The first known two-wheeled vehicle, called a draisine, was created by a German baron in 1817. It had no pedals; you pushed it along with your feet. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel in France, leading to the 'boneshaker'. But it wasn't until the 1880s that the chain drive and pneumatic tires were introduced, making bicycles much safer and more comfortable. So, the key point is that the modern bicycle, as we know it, really emerged in the late 1880s.
