Today in our environmental science lecture, we will discuss the impact of urban green spaces on city temperatures. Recent studies show that parks and rooftop gardens can reduce local temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the effectiveness depends on the size and distribution of these areas. For example, a single large park has a greater cooling effect than several small scattered ones. Additionally, trees with broad leaves provide more shade, but they require more water. In contrast, grass areas cool less but are easier to maintain. Therefore, city planners should prioritize creating larger green spaces and selecting drought-resistant tree species to maximize benefits.
